NASA launches the Phoenix Mars Lander during August. The Phoenix spacecraft was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. It successfully landed on Mars during May of 2008 and used its instruments to thoroughly examine the soil of the planet. The lander confirmed the existence of water-based ice in the sub-surface of Mars and performed several experiments that meant to bring insight into whether or not it was ever a hospitable climate for microbes. Space - New Horizons Visits Jupiter

NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft flies past Jupiter during February of 2007 on its way to Pluto. New Horizons took updated photos of the solar system’s largest planet, the first up-close images to be transmitted since the end of the Galileo mission in 2003. The spacecraft also observed atmospheric conditions, took particle readings, and detailed photos of Jupiter’s rings. New Horizons received a gravity-assist from the planet as it flew past which increased its speed and helped shorten its journey to Pluto by about 3 years.
