1980's Cars Information

The 1980s were a great time for the automobile industry, the average model new 1980 car cost around 7,000 dollars, and a gallon of gas was about 90. cents.

Gas Milleage

In 1980 the Ford motor company turned it emphasis to economy. The goal was to make a car that got 20 MPG, (up from 19 MPG in 1979). The Thunderbird was the star of the line up in it's new down sized form. The LTD II was gone and, Pinto was in it's final season.

Ford Sierra XR8

In July of 1984 Ford of South Africa announced the XR8, this limited editions Sierra model with a Mustang V8 engine, rated at 200 bhp, plus a five-speed close-ratio gearbox, and disk brakes all round. The 5-liter engine ran the car up to more than 140 mph (225kph) and from 0 to 62 mph in less than 8 sec. the car had a five-door body shell and was offered only in white.

Ford Merkur XR4TI

Another Ford super car of the 80s was the Merkur XR4TI a Sierra-based coupe', three -door hatchback with "biplane" rear spoiler. The engine is a 2.3 -liter, 4-cylinder, single overhead cam unit with a Garrett TO3B Turbocharger and gives 170 bhp at 5,200 rpm in manual gearbox form. The car is front-mounted and drivers the rear wheel via. a 5-speed manual or Ford C3 automatic box. The suspension is fully independent and the brakes are disks at the front and drums at the rear. The steering is by power-assisted rack-and -pinion.

Ferrari 4010i

The Ferrari 4010i was a full four-seater two-door car that was powered by a 2940 ci (4,823 cc) fuel-injected v12 engine. The car had a classic ageless Pininfarina styling, and despite having been in production for many years , still looked as up-to-date as any other performance car of its era. The car has a top speed of 152 mph (244kph). It's still considered one of the great classic cars of it's time.

Bristol Beaufighter

The Bristol Beaufighter was the most glamorous of the Bristol range cars. The car was turbo charged with a Chrysler hemi engine. The car was styled by Zagato and introduced as the 412 Convertible Saloon, in 1975. Like similarly powered Brigand it reached 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97kph) in 5.9 sec.

Mercedes-Benz / BMW

In order to meet the challenge of the new 16-valve Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3 in the smaller car sector, BMW introduced their M535i. The BMW M535i had a 209 ci (3,430cc)single-overhead-cam-fuel-injected straight-6 engine. Acceleration from 0 to 62 mph (0 to100 kph ) was possible in 7 sec. There was choice of three different gearboxes for the M535i-the BMW 5-speed with overdrive unit,a close-ratio Getrag 5-speed , or the ZF triple-range switch able automatic. The brakes were accommodated by four-wheel ventilated disk units, with anti-lock control, and the rear seats had generous leg room to accommodate 2 adults.

Bentley Mulsanne

After 51 years Rolls-Royce introduced a Bentley that was more than a re-badged, re-radiatored Rolls Royce. The Bentley that was eventually introduced was the Mulsanne, named after the famous straight on the LeMans racing circuit. The Mulsanne was the last of the really fast Bentley. Equipped with a 6.75 liter V8 engine, it produced a n undisclosed amount of power which propel the heavy car to speeds of over 130 mph (209 kph),and from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97) in 7.4 sec. This model sat four people in great comfort, and could transport them with smoothness and speed. The Bentley delightful to drive and handle, its was considered during its rein as a very expensive delight.

Chrysler convertible LeBaron

The Chrysler motor company was making it's own changes for the 80s when it introduced the first convertible in more then a dozen years-the LeBaron struck a positive nerve with the open-air motorists. The K -cars were so popular with the public, that Chrysler began producing a limousine based on the platform in 1985. For a mere 26,318 you could cruise the town in the pinnacle of Chrysler luxury.
