Known For : A marine geologist with experience with deep-sea diving and exploration, he took part in the first surveys of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. He attained Bachelor of Science degrees in chemistry and geology from the University of California, before doing his Masters in Hawaii. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1967, and dealt with oceanography. He is best known for his search and discovery of the wreck of the Titanic, and his 1985 search was able to retrieve a number of artifacts as well as underwater photographs. Ballard is also known for his 1989 location of the Bismarck.
