Born:
Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías, July 28th, 1954, Sabaneta, Venezuela
Known For
: The president of Venezuela since 1999, who has proclaimed himself
the leader of the 'Bolivarian Revolution.' He served in the Venezuelan
army for seven months, before going to study political science at university.
He did not graduate, but returned to his military duties until 1983. He
had reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He organized an attempted
a coup in 1992, and was imprisoned for it. His support wasn't as strong
as he'd hoped and he was forced to call for an end of hostilities on television.
He had gained a reasonable amount of publicity from his bid for power
and was seen as popular by Venezeula's poorer inhabitants. He campaigned
for the presidency in 1998 and his poll ratings improved up until the
election, which he won with 59% of the vote. His socialist government
immediately created a new constitution for the country which would increase
of the president's terms of office. In 2009 he successfully installed a
system whereby the terms were indefinite. There is international concern
over how authoritarian his regime is, and how it ignores their statutes
for fair elections.
