Berlin Wall Dismantled 1990's
At the end of World War II, the Soviet Union controlled what became the communist country of East Germany. British, French and U.S. forces occupied the western portion of the country, which became noncommunist West Germany. In the 1960's a 12-foot high, 103-mile Wall separated east Germany from west Germany.
After some softening of attitudes on both sides following the end of the cold war in on November 9, 1989 East German citizens began to destroy sections of the Wall and later the government removed the wall completely. In 1990 the reunification of the two sides of Germany East and West began. It has not been easy and Reunification has also cost more money than originally expected, it was never going to be easy to make a single economy out of two countries with such different levels of economic development and different political backgrounds, currently nether side are fully happy with the outcome, the east Germans have lost some important social welfare programmes E.G. government funded and run child care and the west Germans for the increased tax burden , but overall, the German economy appears now to be improving.
