Becoming a paid writer
Posted By
Julie Blodgett , Wisconsin USA, I Never Thought I could be a Paid Writer
I remember my first regular paid writing assignment. I was to do articles for a mere e$1.00 per hour. My next writing assignment was only a few dollars per article.
It wasn’t much pay. In fact, it wasn’t even enough to put food on my table if I did that on a full-time basis. However, to me it was a milestone. Hey, at least I was getting paid for my writing, which not many writers even can say.
I am not saying this to gloat. I am saying this because I was happy to be able to begin succeeding at something I never though I could achieve-success as a writer. Sure, perhaps I started out doing quite a bit of work that didn’t even have my name on.
Likewise, some of the work that I have done I couldn’t even keep for myself because someone else owned the copyright. However, that is not what is most important.
The important thing is that I never thought that I could ever get paid to be a writer. To me it didn’t matter what I was writing-newsletters, website articles, stories, or news features. Writing was writing, and to get paid for it all the better for me.
Of course some of the most prestigious types of writing jobs would be to get paid a couple of hundred of dollars a week to do a regular column piece. However, it takes time to get to that point. In the mean time there are plenty of markets out there that most writers do not even know about that I learned about during my first couple of years as a freelance writer.
For one, I have learned that there is a huge market for website article writing. This means that plenty of websites are looking for content for their site pages. Sometimes these articles are written for little pay, but many of these articles do not take very long to write at all.
Some people can earn $10.00 to $20.00 an hour just doing website article writing. Furthermore, if they hire help they can expand their customer base and even make more money. The possibilities are endless when it comes to freelance writing.
The different markets out there for writers besides website content writing include feature writing, newspaper column writing, story writing (especially non-fiction), biographical writing, and newsletter writing. There is also a big market for resume writing as well as press release writing.
I was determined to make my freelance writing career work for me. Therefore, I took on as many types of writing as possible, including those listed above. I have also done forum and blog writing, which are two very lucrative avenues right now (depending upon the publisher).
What Most Inspired me to Continue Writing
What really inspired me to get involved in writing was when I got paid for my first story. A couple of years ago I submitted a story to a Cup of Comfort book. That story was entitled “Beyond Frustration” and was published in the Cup of Comfort for Christians.
“Beyond Frustration” about God’s faithfulness during hard times. I receive $100.00 for that story, which was very encouraging to me.
