Bats in The Belfry

Posted By
Steve, USA, Bats in the Belfry

In 2001 we had a major influx of bats in the eaves of our old converted barn and we could here them making the clicking noise at nights when we were trying to sleep, it was a bit creepy but we lived with it until the day they moved in.

We have a 30ft ceiling in our lounge and for some reason they had taken up residence inside the house and each time we walked through they would dive bomb us , the girls of course were pretty frantic so we needed to do something about them .

The question was what and how but we hit on an idea with using giant fish landing nets on extending poles . This was before I even knew bats carried rabies so with net in hand and cowboy hat on head girls huddled in the only safe place they couldn't be attacked we caught them one by one and let them go outside.

It was only when our neighbour pointed out that the reason we were infested was all the blackberry bushes round the house that we found out how to get rid of them.

I suppose it is part of the trials and tribulations of living in a converted barn next to a farm but I wouldn't have it any other way.
